Local Farmers Markets
Inflation has really impacted the cost of living, especially when it comes to supermarket prices! Luckily, I discovered that Hawaii's farmers markets offer some fantastic deals on local fruits and veggies. I've started planning my weekly shopping around these markets, and you can find their locations and times at https://hfbf.org/.
On Wednesday afternoons, the parking lot at Neal Blaisdell Center comes alive as a bustling farmers market. Though it's smaller than the Saturday Kaka'ako market, it boasts a close-knit community vibe.
The market is filled with locals shopping for fresh produce, and families with picnic blankets enjoying ono grindz, talking story, and just chilling. The Blaisdell Center itself is a cultural and community hub, hosting concerts, expos, and other events throughout the year.

After grabbing my weekly haul of local mangoes, papayas, apple bananas, calamansi, and citrus, I always visit the La Tour stand for a loaf of sourdough bread. They also make this croissant bread that's absolutely killer for French toast. Sometimes they sell giant macaron cookies, too, which are simply irresistible!
Saturday mornings are when I challenge myself to bike to the farmers market near Diamond Head, located in the parking lot of Kapiolani Community College (KCC).
The college is nestled at the base of the iconic Diamond Head crater, providing a picturesque backdrop for the market. The KCC market is larger, with a diverse selection of vendors and products.

It's a hilly ride to the market, so I start early in the morning. One particular day, my stomach was growling, so I parked my Biki bike on Monsarrat Ave and headed to Cafe Morey's – one of the best brunch spots on Oahu.
Their kimchi fried rice is amazing, and the cozy atmosphere makes it a perfect place to unwind. The cafe's outdoor seating area is adorned with lush plants, creating an inviting oasis in the heart of the city.

After a leisurely breakfast, I pumped myself up for the long walk up the hill towards Diamond Head, knowing that delicious coconut mochi doughnuts awaited me for dessert at the KCC market. These chewy, rice flour, gluten-free treats are addictively delicious!

Exploring Hawaii's farmers markets is such a great way to exercise, connect with the community, and support local entrepreneurs. The local produce, mouthwatering food, and vibrant atmosphere make it a must-visit experience on the islands.
