Paved Uphill Walking Trail to an Iconic Landmark

According to Hawaiian legend, Tahitian god Makapu'u, known for eight bright eyes, resided in a cave on the now-named cliff.
Perched on a 600-foot sea cliff, the lighthouse was built by the U.S. government in the early 1900s to aid navigation for vessels bound for Honolulu. Sea captains and shipowners persuaded the Hawaiian government and the fifty-ninth Congress to establish the light station since no light existed on the entire northern coast of the Hawaiian Islands to guide or warn approaching ships.
The area also has an interesting history, not only for its nautical influence, but also for one time secretly housing key witnesses during the federal tax evasion trial of crime boss, Wilford "Nappy" Pulawa, who led the Hawaiian Syndicate known as The Company.
The Coast Guard automated the Makapu`u Light Station and began remote monitoring in the 1970s and today the historic Makapu'u Lighthouse is off-limits to visitors. Still, the red-roofed beacon is an iconic symbol of O'ahu's nautical history—plus, it's a bona fide movie star! You may recognize it from the beloved romantic comedy, 50 First Dates.
