MAKAPUU LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL
Paved Uphill Walking Trail to an Iconic Landmark
Imagine a leisurely stroll featuring panoramic ocean vistas, rugged cliffs, breathtaking views, and a historic lighthouse, with a chance to spot humpback whales in the winter months. Welcome to the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail, a picturesque 2-mile round trip suitable for most ages and fitness levels, and a great option for those seeking a delightful nature walk in Hawaii.
Perched on a 600-foot sea cliff, the lighthouse was built by the U.S. government in the early 1900s to aid navigation for vessels bound for Honolulu. Sea captains and shipowners persuaded the Hawaiian government and the fifty-ninth Congress to establish the light station since no light existed on the entire northern coast of the Hawaiian Islands to guide or warn approaching ships.
The Coast Guard automated the Makapu`u Light Station and began remote monitoring in the 1970s and today the historic Makapu'u Lighthouse is off-limits to visitors. Still, the red-roofed beacon is an iconic symbol of O'ahu's nautical history—plus, it's a bona fide movie star! You may recognize it from the beloved romantic comedy, 50 First Dates.
So lace up your walking shoes, grab your camera, and set off on this idyllic journey along one of O'ahu's most cherished trails. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a memorable outdoor adventure, the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail offers a little something for everyone. Happy trekking!
