The Grand Canyon of the Pacific

[Waimea, Kaua'i]

I knew I had to plan something extraordinary for my family's visit. I had plenty of beautiful destinations around Honolulu that I wanted them to experience, but I also wanted to seize the opportunity during their travels. So, I decided to arrange a short trip to the island of Kaua'i, a quick 40-minute flight from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. We left most of their luggage in my apartment and packed light for our Kaua'i vacation.

Upon arrival, we grabbed a rental car, stowed our bags in the trunk, and set off to our first destination!

Aloha Roastery, located a quick five-minute drive from the Lihue Airport airport, is an excellent spot for a quick breakfast. The charming cafe has a minimalist, modern, Scandinavian vibe. They are quite popular and tend to sell out their menu offerings quickly. Having risen early for our flight, we were fortunate to enjoy a tranquil moment over espresso and flaky pastries. The coffee was so delicious we bought a couple bags of coffee beans to commemorate the moment.

We then returned to the car and embarked on a scenic drive, eagerly anticipating the incredible views that lay ahead at Waimea Canyon. This drive is often compared to Road to Hana in Maui, but the Kaua'i route is much shorter.

The road took us through lush greenery, shimmering waters, and captivating mountains that only Kaua'i offers. After all, there's a reason Kaua'i is called The Garden Isle!

Along the way, we stopped to stretch our legs and take in the distinctive and awe-inspiring views, like the panoramic lookout point over Hanapepe Valley. We also made a pit stop at Aloha Spice Company to stock up on gifts for my family to bring back home. Kiawe Smoked Garlic Hawaiian Sea Salt is our favorite!

Finally, we began our Waimea Canyon Drive. Enthralled by the colors and picturesque landscapes, we paused to snap countless photos and videos in an attempt to capture the beauty of this geological wonder with its gorgeous red dirt, basalt rocks, and the famous Na Pali cliffs. What a sight to behold!

As a note of caution, the journey along Waimea Canyon Drive features numerous sharp curves, steep inclines, and narrow sections. Those with sensitive stomachs may find it especially helpful to drive slow, take frequent breaks, and stay hydrated. Pro tip: it is not particularly neccessary to pay to park at any of the lookout points. Just drive further up, and you will find a different spot to stop at. Driving back down from the top of the lookout was just as beautiful as the drive there. The descent from the canyon offers panoramic views of the coastline.

With all of our adventuring, we had worked up quite the appetite and were looking forward to lunch. Luckily, Kaua'i offers a variety of delicious dining options. But I had only one destiation in mind: Kauai Sushi Station.

We sat at a picnic table under a tent for a shaded outdoor dining experience. At first, my family was surprised that I brought them to a food truck near Costco. But once they met the chef, and learned that the food truck is run by a husband-and-wife team with over 15 years of experience, they knew they were about to feast on something special!

Delicious rolls and sushi at Kauai Sushi Station

The chef of Kauai Sushi Station is passionate about making fresh, great quality sushi. The food is so delicious, and plated so beautifully. It is a feast for the eyes and the belly every time they bring out the food. It is such a wonderful way to replenish our energy and spirits after our fun Waimea Canyon driving adventure!
