BOCCONCINO
Italian Sandwich Shop
In the ever-evolving culinary landscape of Honolulu, there's a new kid on the block, and I'm already hooked. Bocconcino, a recently opened Italian joint in Kaka'ako, has managed to capture the essence of authentic Italian cuisine in a way that's rare on this side of the world. I've been there multiple times already, and it never disappoints.
At Bocconcino, Chef Donato is the mastermind behind their impressive selection of sandwiches and pizzas, all made with fresh bread, delectable cured meats sourced directly from Italy, and in-house cheese. That's right, folks – the man even built a mozzarella factory on the side to supply his creations with the freshest cheese possible. Talk about dedication.
My favorite sandwich? The Bolognese. Imagine this: amazing mortadella with straciatella cheese, nestled between slices of focaccia-like bread and slathered with a heavenly pistachio cream. It's easily the best sandwich I've had in a long time.
Today, walking into the shop, I immediately spot Chef Donato himself manning the front counter. I order my go-to Bolognese sandwich and, on a whim, a pizza to go. While waiting for the maestro to work his magic, I browse the mini-store stocked with exceptional high-end Italian ingredients – the likes of which are likely not found anywhere else on the island.
I resist the temptation to splurge on the imported goods but make a mental note to indulge next time. My only regret today? Not ordering the tiramisu that's beckoning from the display case. It looks divine, and I'm certain it tastes just as good.
No complaints, though. With my Bolognese sandwich and pizza in tow, I bid adieu to Bocconcino, already looking forward to my next visit. I'm a huge fan, and I'm thrilled to see this gem establish itself in the Kaka'ako and Ala Moana neighborhoods. Grazie, Bocconcino – you've got a loyal customer in me.
