The other day, I found myself with some free time on my hands. So, I decided to explore the vibrant Kaka'ako neighborhood. Known for its unique fusion of arts, culture, and creativity, SALT at Our Kaka'ako is a dynamic gathering place that showcases a curated selection of local shops, eateries, and events.

The SALT complex, and Kaka'ako in general, are adorned with colorful murals at every corner that breathe life into the community. The air is filled with laughter, music, and the sound of people milling about. The ambiance is lively and engaging, the ideal backdrop for an afternoon of exploration.

Inside of Stoke House

One of the first stores that caught my eye was Stoke House, a surf shop that radiates an undeniable coolness factor. The exterior features a bright, beachy mural, and inside, the store is a haven for ocean lovers, with its wooden accents and well-curated selection of surf styles and casual apparel.

I've been looking for a new bag to take on errands and to the beach, and was drawn to the selection of Vissla accessories. One dry bag, in particular, caught my attention with its beautiful sunset design and under $50 cost. I liked how the bag’s material would guard against sand and water, and I was excited to make the purchase.

Eager to explore more shops, I strolled around the neighborhood. A block away from Stoke House, I stumbled upon Kira Hawaii on Keawe St, a delightful boutique with an artful selection of jewelry, clothing, and home goods. The owner, Sheri Kira, grew up in Mililani on Oahu, Hawaii, and the unique, handcrafted pieces for sale at her store have a distinctive Hawaiian flair. I couldn't resist picking up a few items for friends and family!

Feeling a bit peckish, I decided to loop back around and stop by 9Bar HNL, a local coffee shop that's been garnering quite a reputation for its famous "scuffins" – a delightful hybrid of scones and muffins. Thrilled that the shop hadn't yet sold out of them, I snagged a couple of scuffins to go. The cashier shared a pro tip to warm it up for a few minutes in the toaster oven before I enjoy it at home. If you know, you know!

I was debating whether I wanted to get a poke bowl from Redfish, or the mochiko chicken from Pioneer Saloon, when I realized that I hadn't yet checked out Butcher & Bird, an artisanal deli that combines the charm of an old-world butcher shop with a modern twist. The exterior features bold signage and industrial touches. Inside, I was met with a bright, contemporary space that showcases an impressive display of mouthwatering creations, all clearly crafted with skill and dedication. The friendly staff were happy to help me navigate the vast selection.

It was so nice to take a break and enjoy some great food and spend time hanging out and people watching. Although I had scuffins to take home, I knew I would be kicking myself if I didn’t indulge in the gelato and waffle desserts at 7Gradi Gelato. No trip to SALT is complete without this amazing gelato!
