ISLAND BOY

Design-Forward Shopping

[3464 Waialae Avenue]

I was taking a walk around the neighborhood after grabbing a sandwich at Bocconcino, when I spotted a storefront next to Fishcake, a part concept store, part designer showroom that is home to a boutique store, a ceramic studio, an art school, a flower shop, a tattoo studio, and an incubator café space. However, I had never been to the shop next door, Island-Boy. [Edito’s note: the shop has since moved to a new location in Kaimuki, between Local General Store and Keep it Simple.

Walking in, it seemed to have something for everyone - made-in-Hawaii items, swoon-worthy high-end designer pieces, gorgeous knick knacks for the home, lei and flowers, and art.

Inside the beautifully curated Island-Boy Shop

Island-Boy is the creative brainchild of O‘ahu-born Andrew Mau, an expert in all things style and fashion. The shop seems conjured out of the pages of a luxury magazine, but is presented in a way that feels accessible and welcoming. Inside, I felt as though I had been invited to the home of a chic friend with impecible taste.

As a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Andrew has a keen eye and a background in furniture design. He’s cultivated special connections with high-end designers and makers, and showcases exclusive and limited products not found in many retailers in the world. Andrew handpicks every item in the store with purpose and delight, and is very knowledgable about each product. The shop is his way of supporting designers and makers and making an impact on the design community. The items change often, and always feature something new and beautiful.

Selection of goods on sale at Island-Boy Shop

Island-Boy features a wide range of products, from high-quality, luxurious items to more budget-friendly options. This inclusive approach is what sets the store apart, striking the perfect balance between elegance and affordability.

While browsing, I fell in love with a pair of Izipizi sunglasses. This French brand makes stylish unisex sunglasses with 100% UV protection at a price that won’t break the bank. I also couldn't resist the adorable hairclips, in different shapes and styles. I grabbed one in the shape of a strawberry and another of a protective third eye.
