KANEOHE SANDBAR
Explore the Sunken Island
[47-86 Kamehameha Hwy]
People will often suggest that the top activities in O‘ahu include hiking Diamond Head or snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. However, I am here to recommend a captivating afternoon activity that only those in the know discover.
One of the most captivating experiences you can have in Hawaii involves spending a dreamy afternoon at Kāneʻohe Bay. More specifically, at the Kāneʻohe Sandbar, a shallow stretch of turquoise beach in the middle of the ocean.
To get here, you will need leave bustling Waikiki behind. Enjoy a picturesque drive along the H1, followed by a cruise on the Pali Highway (HI-61) that meanders through verdant mountains. After approximately 35 minutes, you'll reach He’eia State Park, an 18-acre peninsula on the waterfront of Kāneʻohe Bay.
Kāneʻohe Bay is the calmest, safest body of water on Oahu and there are many ways to experience this area. One option is to rent a kayak.
Another option can be to secure a reservation for a catamaran tour to the Kāneʻohe Sandbar. The sandbar, an islet known as Ahu o Laka or the "Sunken Island", stretches a mile long.
The sandbar is an oasis that appears to materialize out of the sea itself. Most of the time, it is submerged roughly 1-3 inches deep, but with extreme low tides, an exposed beach appears. This ephemeral, sandy wonderland is a beloved spot for sunbathing, socializing, and exploring the surrounding marine life.
The crystal-clear water of Kāneʻohe Bay is ideal for snorkeling and discovering a mesmerizing underwater world teeming with colorful fish, spectacular coral reef formations, and the occasional sea turtle. There is nothing like gliding through these glassy, azure waters.
Once you have soaked in the unrivaled beauty of this magical place, I suggest further exploring Kāneʻohe. Consider calling Adela's Country Eatery to order a delectable feast to go and then driving to the close-by Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, a lush and stunning area perfect for a tranquil stroll amidst the splendor of lush rainforest flora. For those seeking an unforgettable adventure, a day in Kāneʻohe awaits.
