HULA DANCE LESSONS

In-Person and Online

[1024 Queen Street]

Hula dance is a captivating art form, not just for its mesmerizing movements, but also for its rich cultural significance. One place to experience and participate in this elegant form is at the Still & Moving Center studio in Honolulu, conveniently located across the street from Whole Foods Market and next door to Thyda's Tacos.

Rooted in Hawaiian culture, hula is a form of communication that combines dance and song to tell stories. Before missionaries brought the written word to Hawaii in the 1800s, the islands thrived as an oral culture. The Hawaiian people conveyed stories about places and people through hula, with every gesture imbued with meaning.

At the Still & Moving Center, students can experience two different hula classes. Traditional hula, or hula kahiko, continues the dances taught to the instructor by her teacher, reserved for students looking to deepen their commitment to hula. The modern form, known as hula 'auana, is open to all students. It's an excellent opportunity for anyone aiming to connect to the Hawaiian community in an uplifting way, even for just one class. Along with dance movements, hula offers the opportunity to learn 'ōlelo (Hawaiian language) and listen to traditional Hawaiian instruments like the ipu (gourd drum) and the 'ukulele.

The Still & Moving Center is a two-story tall, 6,000-square-foot yoga and dance facility where classes are taught with Hawaiian grace and gentleness, offering a nurturing environment for learning and growth.

The class schedule is robust, accommodating drop-ins as well as students looking to join virtually. Classes are varied and include hula, Pilates, yoga, tango, tai chi, belly dance, and more!

There is even a cafe inside the studio called PeleKai Coffee. This cafe serves drinks, baked goods, and breakfast bowls, with items available for online ordering. Check their calendar as well for evening events featuring local artists and live music!
